The Tie proposes to the Pontianak

Following on from ttwins' excellent post about pontianaks, here we have IL proposing to JL, at Pizza Hut no less. We planned to give JL flowers for her farewell. It was IL's suggestion to propose to her...the Captain suspects that years of working together and sharing the same telephone line have breeded in him a deep crush for her. And we all know that some jokes are a way of conveying a serious message without the implications or consequences thereof. "I'm only joking!", some people might say, after they have said something spectacularly disgusting/outrageous/insulting or confessed their crush/love for somebody.

As for JL's answer, she said "No, but can I keep the flowers? And you forgot the diamond ring!"

'True Orange ghost stories'

How well versed are you in your Asian ghost folklore? Well, can you guess what is associated with:

A frangipani

A steel pin

and Senior editor JL?

If you guessed Pontianak, then well done! Go get yourself a glass of orange juice.

A Pontianak is a type of vampire in Malay folklore. In folklore, Pontianak often appears as a beautiful and at times seductive woman, usually accompanied by the strong scent of frangipani. According to myth, men who are not wary will be killed or castrated when she morphs into a hideous being.

People believe that having a sharp object like a nail helps them fend off potential attacks by pontianaks, the nail being used to plunge a hole at the back of the pontianak's neck. It is believed that when a nail is plunged into the back of a pontianak's neck, she will turn into a beautiful woman, until the nail is pulled off again.

But why JL you might ask? Well, JL is a beauteous lady of a senior editor, with pale skin and long luxurious jet black hair that flows to her waist. She is elegant in movement, almost floating and gliding around, rather than walking, as mere mortals do. JL is also known to stay back in the Orange till the wee hours of the morning by herself, slaving over a stone cold manuscript that has become as morbidly peaceful as a tombstone and poring over a final proof that has diffused the pungent sickly sweet fragrance of a frangipani flower.

But, as an urban legend has it, it was her exercising behaviour while JL was still a student at university, that led to her being manifested as the 'pontianak'. Apparently, JL loved to go running around the track late at night, all clad in white, with her trademark sweeping tresses all bouncing up and down as she pounded the track in her trainers.

Students who were walking past, or making out under a tree somewhere, at that unearthly hour of the day, swore black and blue that they had 'seen' a pontianak, when all the while it was JL.

Spoooky...

Back to earth now, bringing us to the latter part of this post -

"Pontianak has left the Orange."

JL's farewell card, with her as a hula girl

Sizing up her potential 'victims'

"Mmm, you look like a good feed, BB"

"You are mine now... forever! Muahahah!"

"Ahh, WM, in you I have created my replacement 'killer'!"

"Do not resist, RB Shevchenko, for resistance is futile. All men are easy prey for my lethal charms!"

"Ah MV, don't struggle fair maiden, you know that you want to join me! Muahaha!"

"Yes JE, relax, submit, and enjoy the embrace... of the pontianak!"

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which of these fair maidens will be next to leave us all?

Er, actually the fair prince, RC is next to leave, this coming Monday in fact

Fare well, JL, it's been 4 and a half haunting years for you in the Orange...

Dispose of thoughtfully

What I'm about to say isn't exactly the latest piece of wisdom to dawn a shining light upon the darkness of humankind, its probably been talked, argued, harangued, debated and reflected upon since... say, the 20th Century?

We are living in a fast paced consumer culture of disposable everything - disposable cups, disposable plates, disposable relationships, disposable underwear...

Everything is about the here and now, fast food, fast cars, fast love...

One material stands out in the midst of this vortex of vociferous change, and is ubiquitous in the global pageantry of disposable dispositions -

STYROFOAM

So light, so strong, so simple and pure in its zen-like design, so super

The plainness of Styrofoam's outer shell hides a treasure trove of resplendent goodies, much like a Pandora's Box of sorts

It's everywhere. It's beauty lies in its simplicity and functionality, like transporting my daily breakfast from the canteen upstairs, for example.

The philosophical question that begs to be answered is, have we Oranges, and humans in general, become like Styrofoam?

Always called upon to perform the essential tasks that keep the vicious cycle of existence going, yet in spite of our usefulness and convenient utility, not given the due course of meager respect and humble accord?

If we really are to be disposed of after we have served our purposes, then let's be disposed of thoughtfully and with youthful reverence.

**************************

p.s. this piece was written in praise of the many warm fuzzy farewells that Oranges have been organising for their fellow Oranges who leave the Orange.

It proves that as long as you don't wear a tie for too long, pepper your daily conversations with business jargons to the hilt, hang out in windowless meeting rooms downing insane amounts of coffee, and treat your mobile phone like its a part of your appendage...

you are still able to remember what it is like to be human. To have humanity. To have a soul.

Pool Factor

Yo Oranges! 'Scuse me while I indulge in a bit of my fav pastime of talking about cool movies which I've enjoyed watching, and somehow sneekily weaving them into the blog. It's just that I'm an avid cinephile who truly believes that art imitates life, and vice versa.

As they say, reality used to be a friend of mine, so if you can't beat the grittiness of life... don't fight it... escape from it! Yeah!

Turn the lights off and start the popcorn munching.

- TODAY'S FEATURE MOVIE -
From the 80s vault

The Color of Money is a 1984 novel by American writer Walter Tevis, continuing the story of Edward "Fast Eddie" Felson from The Hustler (1959).

The book was very loosely adapted into a 1986 film of the same name, with Paul Newman reprising his role from the movie version of The Hustler (film) (1961). The film also stars Tom Cruise as Vincent and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Carmen.

- TODAY'S ORANGE FEATURE -

Having a late Monday night pool session at Pool Fusion 2, Bugis...

DD gives his protege, BH some pool shark tips,
"It's so easy, just like piercing a fishball, poke the stick straight through with one smooth gliding action, and voila! Into the hole the ball goes!"

"My, NT, that's a long... never mind."

Chill...

Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th saw the Captain being forced to go on a school trip, to do yet another teacher interview. The Captain isn't too fond of teacher interviews, but since he had practically been "bundled into the bag" by forces apparently having a greater say in what the Captain should be doing on a Friday afternoon, he had little choice but to go.

It didn't help that the "forces apparently having a greater say in what the Captain should be doing" decided to stand up from her cubicle and stare at the Captain as he called for a cab, whilst claiming that "I like to watch people." Not that I wanted to be mean, but I really felt like giving her another black eye when she did that.

Anyway, moment of mean-ness aside, the Captain would like to wish MN a very happy birthday! The Captain hopes that MN had lots of fun and laughter on her very special day =D

AVS (yeah those are her initials indeed) and ML's latest target, Z

WM has a rather strained smile on her face...while GK cannot smile properly even after all these years of being told that he has a "twisted smile" and striving hard to wipe off that damn twist from his smile

Z complains that I took a lousy photo of her. What totally diva-ish behaviour!

The Captain was then invited to a Friday shopping trip with MS, NT and ML. Actually the Captain didn't want to go cuz he wasn't invited in the first place, and the Captain really does not like being an uninvited guest. But ML insisted...and recited the "Sixpack oath of Brotherhood", a very powerful oath that once invoked, brooks no resistance from a Sixpacker...

Monkeying around before dinner...

The two 'M's, about to embark on the greatest love story of their lives....or just another friendship =p

Erm...I struggle for words to describe this photo. What more can one say about a couple of idiotic-looking monkeys pointing fingers at each other?

Oooh. NT's fantastic-looking salad.

Roasted B.B. King Chicken Sandwich. Go figure.

ML's very cheesy baked rice

After dinner, shopping commences...and the reader can get a glimpse of what these 3 plotters are up to...they are checking out lime-green male underwear. One can only hope the lime-green underwear isn't one of their props in a 3-person activity that takes place in a bedroom...

Finding Picasso

NT, our resident artist extraordinare and Editor At Large, has also relocated his art studio to Science Park.

Here he is with his latest creations...

"Beauty so bold...ooh... La Femme Ces't Magnifique!"

"With my fingers, I type... with my fingers I draw... with these sketches,
eternity is encapsulated on paper... for now, forever. Such mystery and splendour...
how is it possible?"

Oh, and today being a very lucky and special day for us Oranges, yes, it's Friday the 13th...

MN's birthday!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIRTHDAY. :D
